First pass at a dye release simulation in the CSIDE study region

Nirnimesh has performed the first dye release simulation in the CSIDE study region.  This is with the COAWST model that couples waves and currents and has a 20 m grid resolution.  This simulation is for a period of time in Fall 2014 with northward winds.  Nirnimesh also sent in waves with significant wave height of 1 m, peak period Tp=14 … Read More

beach site visits

Falk, Nirnimesh and Sarah traveled the IB-Coronado stretch of beach on Sunday to check out planned sites for surf-zone based instrumentation. Here Falk and Nirni joke around just north of the IB pier (seen to the left). Note the sign for strong currents, wave driven currents are one of the key processes we will be studying as they impact along-shore and … Read More

Wave modeling for the San Diego South Bay Region

As part of the CSIDE modeling efforts,we are interested in performing some numerical dye releases for the CSIDE experimental region, the San Digo South Bay. In an earlier post, the 50 m grid size ocean circulation (ROMS) model solution developed by Nirnimesh Kumar was highlighted. That simulation did not have waves, and Nirnimesh is working on putting waves into the … Read More

MCIP Fabrication

Our fabrication guru, Kent Smith, welds components for the mobile cart instrument platforms (MCIP). Assembly is now complete, and the steel frames are at San Diego Galvanizing to be galvanized–this treatment prevents corrosion and will extend the lives of these units. Each cart will be outfitted with instruments to measure temperature, pressure, dye concentration, and water velocity. Our volunteers will … Read More

more prep work!

Fluorometer calibrations and sealing pressure cases for the mobile cart instrument platforms (MCIPs)!   The first photo shows (clockwise from upper left) Falk Feddersen, Greg Boyd, Angelica Gilroy, Derek Grimes, Rachel, and Rob Grenzeback working on fluorometer calibrations to dye standards. The second photo shows a close-up of the fluorometer in one of the dye standard buckets… you cannot tell … Read More

Dye Pump Calibration

Here, Rob Grenzeback and Derek Grimes are grinding away calibrating the dye pump.  We need to know exactly how much dye gets metered out for our experiments and so calibrating the pump is extremely important.   This is a very pink task!

Simulation of the San Diego South Bay Region: July-Nov 2014

Nirnimesh Kumar, our intrepid COAWST (coupled ROMS/SWAN) modeling expert has been grinding away developing a numerical model for our study region: The San Diego South Bay.   His latest creation is really spectacular These simulations show evolution of sea surface temperature and depth-averaged velocities from July 1, 2014 to December 1, 2014 in Southern California including Imperial Beach. The grid resolution … Read More

dye ski testing!

Rob Grenzeback climbing down the Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s pier ladder to conduct the first tests of the Dye Ski! The Dye Ski being hoisted down to the water to meet Rob is a jet ski that is configured to measure the dye concentration, turbidity, and temperature of the water! During our experiments, it will run transects from the surfzone offshore over … Read More
